-Why was Hearts for Emma founded?
Hearts for Emma was started by Mark and Nancie Rothman after their then 12-year-old daughter Emma received a lifesaving heart transplant. Mark and Nancie founded Hearts for Emma to pay it forward and help support other families in crisis as a result of having a child with a serious heart condition. Read more in Our Story.

-How does Hearts for Emma help families?
Hearts for Emma supports select projects at the Pediatric Heart Transplant Program at NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital. We believe that this is the best use of our current resources to positively impact families with children who have serious heart conditions as stated in our mission. This organization was chosen in part because of the lifesaving care they provided to Emma.

Our first project was providing meal cards to families whose children were admitted for extended stays in the Heart Transplant Program. As you can imagine, meals in New York City are quite expensive, and families were thus able to use our meal cards to eat while staying at the hospital to be with their children. After speaking with hospital staff and administration as well as other families, our Board of Trustees has several other projects underway.  We provide updates on our projects on our blog.

-How much of my donation goes to help families?
Hearts for Emma is a volunteer organization, run by our founders and Board of Trustees. We have no office, as volunteers work from their homes, and no one takes a salary. As a result, we have virtually no operating expenses. Most of the money we receive from donations goes to projects handpicked by our Board to be most impactful for families in need and also to support our fundraising events so that we can help more families in the future.
